Iceland Introduces Digital Nomad Visa for Remote Workers

Iceland has unveiled a brand-new visa programme designed to attract digital nomads and remote workers from around the world. This initiative offers non-EEA and non-EFTA citizens the chance to live and work in Iceland for up to six months while enjoying its stunning scenery, vibrant culture, and high quality of life.

The visa is aimed at professionals who work remotely for foreign employers or run their own businesses, allowing them to maintain their careers while experiencing the beauty and tranquillity of Iceland.

Visa Duration and Eligibility

The length of stay depends on where the application is submitted:

Up to 180 days for applicants who apply from their home country before travelling.

Up to 90 days for applicants already within the Schengen area.

Successful applicants can bring their spouse or partner and children under 18, provided they are exempt from needing a Schengen visa. However, visa holders will not receive an Icelandic ID number (kennitala) and are prohibited from working for Icelandic employers or entering the local job market.

To qualify, applicants must:

Hold citizenship from a country outside the EEA/EFTA.

Be visa-exempt for entry into the Schengen area.

Not have received a long-term visa from Iceland in the past 12 months.

Work remotely for a foreign company or be self-employed, with no intention of permanent settlement.

Prove a monthly foreign income of at least ISK 1,000,000 (approx. USD 7,200) — or ISK 1,300,000 (approx. USD 9,400) if applying with a spouse or partner.

Application Process

Applications must be submitted in paper form to the Directorate of Immigration in Kópavogur or at District Commissioners’ offices outside Reykjavík. The processing fee is ISK 12,200 (about USD 88), payable via bank transfer, with proof of payment included in the application.

Required documents:

Valid passport and copies of relevant pages.

Passport-sized photo (35×45 mm).

Proof of health insurance covering your stay.

Employment contract or proof of self-employment.

Evidence of sufficient income (e.g., contracts or project agreements).

For family members, official documents such as marriage or birth certificates.

Incomplete submissions may face delays or rejection. Upon arrival, applicants must visit the Directorate of Immigration to finalise their visa.

Benefits and Restrictions

The Iceland digital nomad visa lets remote workers enjoy breathtaking landscapes, a safe living environment, and access to other Schengen countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

However, the visa is strictly for remote work and does not lead to permanent residency or local employment.

With this programme, Iceland joins the growing number of countries embracing the digital nomad lifestyle, positioning itself as a top choice for professionals seeking a unique work-life balance in a truly extraordinary location.
