KARACHI – The metropolis has once again come under the grip of torrential monsoon rains, with several areas recording over 100mm of rainfall. The downpour sparked fears of urban flooding and further strain on Karachi’s already fragile infrastructure.
As heavy rain lashed the city, roads turned into streams, leaving traffic at a complete standstill. Commuters remained trapped in vehicles for hours, while low-lying neighborhoods were hit the hardest, with water seeping into homes, shops, and offices. Many families were forced to evacuate and move to safer locations.
Adding to the city’s woes, power outages were reported in multiple districts, deepening frustration for residents already struggling with the aftermath of flooding.
Municipal authorities, along with rescue teams, have been deployed to drain water and clear affected routes. Efforts are also underway to restore electricity and ensure normal life resumes as quickly as possible.
This year’s Karachi rains once again highlight the city’s vulnerability to climate change and inadequate drainage systems, raising urgent questions about long-term urban planning and preparedness.
