Australia to Officially Recognise Palestinian State at UN General Assembly This September

Australia is set to take a historic step by formally recognising a Palestinian state at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. This move will align Canberra with other key global players, including the United Kingdom, France, and Canada, who have already voiced their support for Palestinian statehood.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the decision, highlighting assurances from the Palestinian Authority to demilitarise, hold democratic elections, and respect Israel’s right to exist. He described the two-state solution as “humanity’s best hope” for ending decades of bloodshed, displacement, and the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

However, Israel has strongly condemned Australia’s decision, arguing that it “rewards terrorism” and undermines efforts to achieve lasting peace.

The announcement comes at a time of growing international pressure on Israel to halt its ongoing military operations in Gaza, as calls for a negotiated peace deal intensify worldwide.

With this move, Australia signals its commitment to a diplomatic path forward — one that envisions both Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in peace, security, and mutual reco

gnition.
